In the biological sense, an adult animal or human is one that has completely grown. Within the human realm, adult refers to social and legal concepts. In contrast to "minor" or "non-adult", a legal-age adult is an individual that has reached the age of an age at which they are majority. They are regarded as responsible, independent and capable. The term "major" is a term used to describe the person. It is generally accepted that the threshold at which an individual legally matures is 18. However, this can differ based on the legal rights and countries as well as the development of the individual's psychological.

Adulthood is the time that an individual has reached maturity both in physical and mental development. It usually starts when a person reaches an age that is 21. The middle age stage, which begins approximately 40 years of age, is followed by old age at about 60 years old. There are three main stages of adulthood beginning in early adulthood (18 up to the mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s to mid-60s) as well as later adulthood (mid-60s until death).
