In the biological sense, an animal, or human is one who has fully grown. Within the human realm, adults refer to legal and social concepts. Legal adult means a person has reached the age of maturity and can be considered to be an independent, self-sufficient person and accountable. An adult who is legally mature can be referred to as a major. It is generally accepted that the threshold at which an individual legally matures is 18. But, it can differ based on the legal rights and the country of origin as well as psychological development.

If a person attains full intellectual and physical maturity, this is called adulthood. It usually starts when a person reaches the age of 21. Middle age, commencing around 40 years old then follows by an ageing process that can last up to 60 years old. There are three major phases of adulthood: the early years of adults (18 up to the mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s until mid-60s) and then later adulthood (mid-60s until the time of death). When we enter early adulthood (20 to early 40s), our physical maturation is complete, although our weight and height might increase slightly. When we are young our physical capabilities are at their peak, including the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed as well as sensory capabilities, cardiac functioning.
