The meaning that adults have in biology refers to an animal that is capable of reproduction. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to legal and social concepts. In contrast to a person who is not considered an adult or "minor" an legal adult is a person who has reached the age of majority which makes them independent competent, responsible, and capable. A legal adult can be referred to as a major. The age of 18 is the standard legally-adulted age at which you can become an adult but this could vary based on the country of origin and legal status, and also psychological maturity.

In the lifespan of human beings Adulthood refers to the point in which the person is at the point of complete mental and physical maturity. Typically, the age of adulthood is around age 21 or 20.
